Bishop's Glen, Dunoon -
Grade B |
|
The Bishop's Glen Walk starts at the West Bay Car
Park in Dunoon. From here you make your way up to
the reservoir behind the town by following the Kilbride
Road that climbs in a northwest direction from the
car park. Once at the reservoir, the way becomes a
good quality forest path which traverses around the
reservoir.

|
This Grade B walk is approximately 2 and
a half miles long and takes around 2 hours to complete.
Bishop's Glen Reservoir was the
original site of the Dunoon Waterworks which closed
in the 1970's as the population expanded in Dunoon
and the surrounding areas. The increasingly heavy
demands made upon the reservoir forced the town to
look to nearby Loch Eck as an alternative fresh water
supply.

|
The walk has a degree of built in flexibility in
the shape of numerous side paths, loops and detours
to extend it if you so desire. You can take the easy
option and complete the circuit around the reservoir
by making use of the stairs to negotiate the few steep
sections along the way.

After returning to the starting
point, you can choose to extend your walk by hiking
from Bishop's Glen to Dunan (Grade C). Much of the
trail is through the Bishop's Glen Forest which affords
occasional views over the Firth of Clyde. When emerging
from the Forest the view over Dunoon is well worth
the walk itself. The 175 metre pinnacle of Dunan is
an old volcanic plug which is the cold remains of
a volcano's central core. From this viewpoint, the
panorama takes in Benmore in the west all the way
across to the Holy Loch, Sandbank, Kilmun, Kilcreggan,
Gourock and in good weather down the Clyde coast to
Largs.
