Dunoon and Cowal
Walking in Cowal
Beinn Mhor - Grade E

Beinn Mhor, the highest hill in Cowal, involves a walk of 7 miles and should take approximately 6 hours to complete. Beinn Mhor rises to a height of 741 metres and from the top offers splendid views over Loch Eck, Loch Tarsan and south towards the Isle of Bute.

It is essential that proper hillwalking apparel and equipment is used for this walk in view of the frequent and sudden changes of weather that are commonplace on the mountains.

The starting point is the grounds of the Benmore Botanic Gardens, situated 7 miles outside of Dunoon. After walking along the west side of Loch Eck, take the road on the north side of the burn in the Bernice Glen for as far as it goes up the glen and continue by a path through the forest up to the pass at the foot of the north-east ridge of Beinn Mhor.

Climb this quite steep ridge with crags on the left to the flatter summit of the hill. From Clach Bheinn, the descent to Loch Eck can be made down the south-east ridge, or in a more circuitous way down the north-east ridge to visit the Paper Cave where it is said that the Campbells hid their family deeds and documents in the 17th Century.
