Puck's Glen, Benmore - Grade C |
|
Graded as a C route, Puck's Glen walk is signposted from the main
Dunoon road half a mile north of the turnoff for Kilmun and begins at
Puck's Glen Car Park. Before heading upwards through the woods,
it leads down into the shady gorge of Puck's Glen itself.
The walk is 2 miles' long and takes roughly an hour and a half to complete.

|
The steep, narrow gorge is interwoven
with waterfalls and shallow rock pools spanned by
arched wooden bridges and timber walkways.
A stopping point along the way is the site of where
the famous Duncan Gazebo once stood. This was where
well-to-do Victorian ladies would while away the summer
afternoons drinking tea while their spouses hunted
deer in the surrounding woodlands. The Gazebo itself
now resides in nearby Benmore Botanic Gardens.

On reaching this point, you can
either double back through the gorge and return to
the car park, or continue up the Glen to the top of
the tree line where you will be rewarded by the spectacular
views over the forest.
Puck’s Glen is part of the Benmore Estate,
the ownership of which has changed hands many times
over the years. The Younger family of the well-known
brewing dynasty, was responsible for the creation
of Puck’s Glen, transforming a natural gorge
with its dramatic overhanging cliffs and waterfalls
into a mystical Victorian indulgence to be enjoyed
by friends and family. In 1924, Mr Younger gifted
Benmore Estate to the nation via the Forestry Commission
for the purpose of education and science. |
|
| Puck’s Glen fell into disrepair
and neglect for many years. Following severe gales
in the 1950’s and 1960’s which resulted
in the path being obstructed by fallen trees, and
in the interests of safety, the Glen was abandoned
as a forest walk. Due to continued public interest,
Puck’s Glen was restored during a four-year
period between 1983 and 1986.
At the end of the walk, you should emerge on the
old road next to an antiquated cast iron milepost.
From here, a left turn will bring you back to the
Forestry Commission car park.
